Training

DI is specialised in the organisation of interactive training courses in field diplomacy, conflict impact assessment, election monitoring and observation and human rights monitoring. Most of our training sessions are given in English or Dutch. But we are currently working on modules in French and Spanish, and possibly in Portuguese too. Our most important training courses are the ones in field diplomacy and those in CIAS .

Training in field diplomacy

This training offers practical training and tips for a broad variety of subjects that are crucial to the practice of field diplomacy and peacebuilding, such as, what are the tools and strategies available to the 'field diplomat'? How can one assess the impact of an intervention? What does a mediator's practice really look like? How does one cope with stress? What are the rules of non-violent communication? How does one deal with moral dilemmas? How does one move from problem solving to solution finding? What is the role of leadership and how can it enhance the process of peacebuilding?

All sessions are aimed at providing some practical tools which can be used in the participants' own field of expertise. If applied consistently by the participants in their own working environment, this training can enhance the peace-added move beyond the goal of advocacy and indeed contribute to more sustainable peacebuilding.

All individuals with an interest in conflict prevention and peacebuilding (development workers, humanitarian relief workers, people from the business sector, journalists, etc.) can apply, as FDI favours great diversity among the participants.

Training course in Conflict Impact Assessment (CIAS)

A Conflict Impact Assessment attempts to estimate the impact of an intervention on the (potential) conflict environment in which it takes place, and vice versa. Therefore, a CIAS is ideally carried out before, during and after an intervention. A CIAS can be conducted on three possible levels: project level, sectoral level, and overall policy level. A CIAS allows for the reduction of conflict-enhancing aspects of the intervention, while it also identifies the peace-added value of the intervention. The ultimate goal of a CIAS lies in proposing suggestions for improvement of the intervention, so as to maximize its peace-added value, while reducing its conflict-enhancing aspects.

As such, a CIAS can be an invaluable tool for sustainable peacebuilding.

This training course provides a detailed description of the various steps in a CIAS, complemented with testimonies from field experts.
The course also pays due attention to creative thinking and the development of measures to improve interventions.
